생물종 상세정보
수심 1~10m의 연안 진흙에 여러해살이풀로 자라는 해양성 수생식물이다. 땅속줄기는 지름 3~5mm, 마디에서 뿌리를 내린다. 잎은 2줄로 어긋나며 선형으로 길이 50~120cm, 폭 4~9mm, 끝은 둔하고 아래는 잎집으로 싸인다. 잎맥은 7개이다. 꽃차례가 나오는 가지는 길이 10cm 정도, 지름 2mm, 마디가 있다. 꽃은 4~8월에 암수한포기로 핀다. 육수꽃차례는 한쪽으로 배열하고 불염포로 싸인다. 꽃차례 위에는 수꽃이 달리고 아래는 암꽃이 달린다. 열매는 수과, 기둥 모양이다. 씨는 긴 타원형으로 길이 2~3.5mm이다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 북극권에서 열대까지 전 세계에 분포한다. 이 종은 국내에 분포하는 거머리말속의 식물들과 비교하여 잎맥이 7개고 중앙맥과 첫 번째 맥 사이에 4~6개의 세로줄이 있는 특징으로 구분된다. 어류의 서식처와 산란 장소가 되며 바다 숲 조성에 이용한다. 잘피라고도 부른다.
