천남성목 개구리밥과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 식물 전체가 하나의 잎처럼 생겼는데 편평하고 넓은 도란형이다. 길이는 3~10mm, 너비 3~8mm이며, 가장자리와 뒷면은 자색을 띠고, 손가락처럼 갈라진 5~10개의 잎줄이 있다. 흔히 식물체 3~5개가 가는 자루로 연결되어 있다. 식물체 아랫면 중앙 근처에서 길이 3~5cm 되는 뿌리가 5~10개 정도 나온다. 꽃은 거의 관찰되지 않는데, 7~8월에 하얀색으로, 식물체에 홈이 파여 그 안에서 핀다. 저수지나 호수, 도랑 등지의 물 위에 떠서 무리 지어 사는 한해살이 수생식물이다. 휴면아를 만들어 겨울철을 지내며, 다음 해에 물위로 떠올라 번식한다. 좀개구리밥에 비해 뿌리는 5~11개이고, 잎처럼 생긴 식물체 뒷면이 자색을 띠며, 잎줄이 5~11개 있어 다르며, 분개구리밥은 뿌리가 없고, 잎줄이 없어 다르다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 전 세계에 분포한다.     유원총보 이아(爾雅)에는 ‘화평(華萍)’이라 되어 있는데 뿌리가 없고 물에 떠서 살아간다. 월령(月令)에 따르면 계춘(季春: 음력 3월)에 비로소 부평초가 난다. 주서(周書)에는 곡우(穀雨) 하루 동안에 부평초가 비로소 나며 음기(陰氣)가 가득한 곳에서는 살지 않는다고 한다. 주례(周禮) 추관(秋官)에 “평씨(萍氏: 벼슬 이름)는 금천(禁川: 궁궐의 시내, 혹은 홍수)을 관장했는데 부평초가 뿌리가 없다는 것에서 이름을 취해 ‘불침닉(不沈溺)’이라 하였다”고 되어 있다. 본초강목에 부평초를 일명 ‘평(䓑: 마름)’이라 하였다. 큰 것은 ‘빈(蘋)’이라 하고 강동(江東) 지역에서는 ‘표(薸)’라고 한다. 일명 ‘수백(水白), 수선(水蘚), 수렴(水簾), 부채(芣菜)’라고도 한다. 세설신어에는 “버들 꽃이 물에 들어가면 부평초가 된다”라 하였다. 여람(呂覽)에는“아름다운 부평초는 곤륜(崑崙)의 부평초다”라 되어 있다. 회남자에는 “무릇 부평초는 물에 뿌리를 두고, 나무는 흙에 뿌리를 둔다”라 하였다. 비공개
    지봉유설 진드기는 浮萍을 따다가 태워서 그 냄새를 피우면 곧 없어진다고 했다. 진드기 기피제 비공개
    향약집성방 맛은 맵고 시며 성질은 차고 독이 없다. 갑자기 열이 나는 것과 몸이 가려운 것을 치료하고 수기를 몰아내며 술독을 푼다. 또 수염과 머리털을 잘 자라게 하고 소갈을 멈추며 기를 내린다. 이 약을 물에 두고 끓여서 목욕하면 머리털이 나온다. 장기간 먹으면 몸이 거뜬해진다. 일명 수화, 수백, 수소라고도 한다. 못에서 자라며 음력 3월에 뜯어 햇볕에 말린다. 열독, 풍열병, 열기로 미친 것, 화끈 달아오르는 종독, 끓는물이나 불에 덴 상처, 풍진 등을 치료한다. (일화자) 지금은 곳곳의 개울가나 못에서 자라는데 이것이 물속에서 자라는 대평이다. 큰 것은 잎이 둥글고 넓이가 1치나 되며 잎밑에 물거품같은 점이 하나 있다. 일명 부평이라고도 한다. 이아에는 평이라 하였는데 큰 것은 빈이라고 하였다. 주남시에는 채빈이라 하였고 육기에는 바다가운데 있는데 굵고 큰 것은 빈이라고 하였다. 늦봄에 갓 돋은 것을 뜯어 쪄서 나물로 먹는다. 식초나 술에 담가서 쓴다. (도경) 3가지가 있는데 큰 것은 빈, 중간 것은 행채라 하는데 이것은 하부규이다. 작은 것은 물위에 뜨는 부평초인데 개울에서 자란다. 지금 의사들은 대빈을 드물게 쓴다. 민간에서는 부평초를 유행성열병을 치료하는데 쓰고 있다. (소공) 음력 5월에 뜯어 그늘에서 말린다. 이것을 태워 연기를 내면 모기가 달아난다. 또 소갈증 때 개평초로 즙을 짜먹는다.     향약집성방 맛은 맵고 시며 성질은 차고 독이 없다. 갑자기 열이 나는 것과 몸이 가려운 것을 치료하고 수기를 몰아내며 술독을 푼다. 또 수염과 머리털을 잘 자라게 하고 소갈을 멈추며 기를 내린다. 이 약을 물에 두고 끓여서 목욕하면 머리털이 나온다. 장기간 먹으면 몸이 거뜬해진다. 일명 수화, 수백, 수소라고도 한다. 못에서 자라며 음력 3월에 뜯어 햇볕에 말린다. 열독, 풍열병, 열기로 미친 것, 화끈 달아오르는 종독, 끓는물이나 불에 덴 상처, 풍진 등을 치료한다. (일화자) 지금은 곳곳의 개울가나 못에서 자라는데 이것이 물속에서 자라는 대평이다. 큰 것은 잎이 둥글고 넓이가 1치나 되며 잎밑에 물거품같은 점이 하나 있다. 일명 부평이라고도 한다. 이아에는 평이라 하였는데 큰 것은 빈이라고 하였다. 주남시에는 채빈이라 하였고 육기에는 바다가운데 있는데 굵고 큰 것은 빈이라고 하였다. 늦봄에 갓 돋은 것을 뜯어 쪄서 나물로 먹는다. 식초나 술에 담가서 쓴다. (도경) 3가지가 있는데 큰 것은 빈, 중간 것은 행채라 하는데 이것은 하부규이다. 작은 것은 물위에 뜨는 부평초인데 개울에서 자란다. 지금 의사들은 대빈을 드물게 쓴다. 민간에서는 부평초를 유행성열병을 치료하는데 쓰고 있다. (소공) 음력 5월에 뜯어 그늘에서 말린다. 이것을 태워 연기를 내면 모기가 달아난다. 또 소갈증 때 개평초로 즙을 짜먹는다.
