바닷가나 저지대 풀밭에 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 줄기는 여러 대가 모여나고, 높이 25~80cm이며, 마디는 6~11개 있다. 잎몸은 길이 8~20cm이고, 너비 2~4mm이다. 잎혀는 길이 1mm 정도이고 위쪽에 털이 있다. 꽃은 7~9월에 핀다. 전체 꽃차례는 가지가 손바닥 모양으로 달리고, 길이 4~6cm이며, 가지의 마디마다 자루가 있는 작은이삭과 자루가 없는 작은이삭이 쌍으로 달린다. 자루가 있는 작은이삭은 수꽃이고 까락이 없다. 자루가 없는 작은이삭은 양성화이며 까락이 있다. 자루가 없는 작은이삭의 제1포영의 아래에는 털이 많고, 길이 4~5mm이다. 호영은 길이 10~15mm의 까락이 윗부분에서 나오고 중간이 꺾인다. 자루가 없는 작은이삭은 털이 없다. 우리나라 경기도, 강원도, 충청북도, 충청남도, 경상북도, 경상남도 등에 나며, 중국, 유럽과 아시아의 온대 지방, 아프리카 북서부 등에 분포한다. 전체 꽃차례가 유사한 나도바랭이새속 식물들은 작은이삭에 자루가 있는 것과 없는 것 두 종류가 비슷하며, 둘 다 임성이므로 다르다.
