분류체계
유럽 원산의 귀화식물이며 길가나, 목장 주변에서 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 땅속줄기는 길게 뻗는다. 줄기는 여러 대가 모여나고, 높이 30~100cm이며, 마디가 3~5개 있다. 잎집은 털이 없다. 잎몸은 길이 10~35cm, 너비 4~8mm이다. 잎혀는 길이 약 2mm로 끝이 납작하다. 꽃은 5~7월에 피는데 전체 꽃차례는 한 마디에 가지가 3~4개 달리고, 길이 10~15cm이다. 작은이삭은 타원형이고 길이 15~25mm이고, 꽃이 6~13개 들어 있다. 제1포영은 맥이 한 개 있고, 길이 6~9mm이다. 제2포영은 3개의 맥이 있고, 길이 9~11mm이다. 호영은 5~7개의 맥이 있고, 길이 9~12mm이며 길이 1~2mm의 짧은 까락이 있다. 내영은 호영보다 약간 짧다. 우리나라 중부지방, 경기도, 강원도, 충청북도, 경상남도 등과 러시아 시베리아에 귀화하여 자라며, 유럽에 분포한다. 이 종은 꼬리새에 비해 땅속줄기가 길게 뻗고 까락은 길이가 1~2mm로 훨씬 짧으므로 구별된다. 목초로 쓴다.
