산지의 풀밭에서 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 줄기는 모여서 나오고, 높이 15~60cm이며, 1~3개의 마디가 있다. 잎은 주로 기부에서 나고 잎집은 마디 간격보다 길고 털이 없다. 잎혀는 길이 10~15mm이다. 잎몸은 길이 5~15cm, 너비 1~3mm이다. 꽃은 7~8월에 피는데 전체 꽃차례는 원추형이고 마디에 2~3개의 가지가 달리고, 전체 길이는 5~15cm이다. 꽃차례의 가지는 다시 갈라지기도 하고 끝부분에 작은이삭이 달린다. 작은이삭은 납작하고 타원형으로 길이 4~6mm로써 두 개의 꽃이 들어 있다. 제1포영은 4mm 정도이고 제2포영은 5~6mm이다. 호영은 막질로서 길이 3.0~4.5mm이고, 5개의 맥이 있고 끝이 갈라지고, 중간 아래에서 3~5mm의 까락이 나온다. 내영의 길이는 호영과 비슷하다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 뉴질랜드, 러시아 시베리아, 일본, 중국, 북아메리카, 아프리카, 유럽, 히말라야 등에 분포한다. 이 종은 귀리족 식물 내에서는 임성 소화가 두 개이고, 씨방에 털이 없으며, 꽃에 자루가 있는 점 등으로 구분된다. 두매쌀새, 두메잔새, 산우산대잔듸, 잔새라고도 부른다.
