Cynosurus indicus L.
경작지 주변과 빈터에 자라는 한해살이풀이다. 줄기는 여러 개가 나며 비스듬히 선다. 높이는 15~60cm이고, 2~3개의 마디가 있다. 잎집은 납작하고, 입구에 긴 털이 있다. 잎몸은 길이 5~40cm이고, 너비 3~7mm이다. 잎혀는 길이 1mm 정도이다. 꽃은 8~9월에 피는데 전체 꽃차례는 줄기 끝에 3~10개의 가지가 손바닥 모양으로 달리고, 길이 5~15cm이다. 작은이삭은 가지 한쪽에 두 줄로 조밀하게 달리며, 길이 3~5mm로 납작하고, 꽃이 3~9개 들어 있다. 제1포영은 1.0~2.5mm이고, 맥이 한 개다. 제2포영은 길이 2~3mm이며, 3개의 맥이 있다. 호영은 5개의 맥이 있고 막질이다. 내영은 호영보다 약간 짧고 2개의 맥이 있다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 일본, 중국 및 구대륙의 온대, 열대 지역 등에 분포한다. 왕바랑이라고도 부른다. 전체 꽃차례의 가지가 줄기 끝에 손바닥 모양으로 달리는 것이 바랭이속 식물들과 비슷하지만, 작은이삭에 다수의 꽃이 들어 있다. 바랭이속의 작은이삭에는 꽃이 두 개 들어 있으므로 다르다.
