분류체계
남아메리카 원산의 귀화식물이며 저지대 초원에서 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 줄기는 모여나고, 높이 50~150cm이다. 잎집은 털이 없고, 입구에만 긴 털이 있다. 잎몸은 길이 10~30cm이고, 너비 5~12mm이다. 잎혀는 2~4mm이다. 꽃은 8~9월에 핀다. 전체 꽃차례에는 3~5개의 가지가 달리고, 작은이삭이 한쪽에만 2~3줄로 조밀하게 달린다. 작은이삭은 난형이고, 가장자리에 긴 털이 있으며, 길이 3.0~3.5mm, 2개의 꽃이 들어 있는데 하나는 불염성이다. 제1포영은 없고, 제2포영은 길이 3.0~3.5mm이고 맥이 3개이며 가장자리에 긴 털이 있다. 임성인 꽃의 호영은 포영보다 약간 짧다. 우리나라 제주도 및 중국, 일본 등에 귀화하여 분포한다. 이 종은 제2포영의 가장자리에 긴 털이 있고, 잎집에는 털이 없는 것이 특징이다. 우리나라의 다른 참새피속 식물은 포영 가장자리에 긴 털이 없으며, 털물참새피와 참새피는 잎몸과 잎집에 털이 있는 것이 다르다.
