Panicum alopecuroideum L.
사초목 벼과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 뿌리줄기는 질기며, 사방으로 뻗어가며 퍼진다. 줄기는 높이 30~80cm로 곧게 서고 덤불을 이루어 자라며 아주 뻣뻣하다. 잎은 선형으로 편평하며, 길이 30~60cm, 폭 5~8mm 정도, 약간의 털이 있고, 중간쯤에서 아래로 늘어진다. 꽃은 8~9월에 피는데 이삭꽃차례는 원주형이고 길이는 15~25cm, 직경은 15mm로서 흑자색이다. 작은이삭은 길이 5mm 정도이고 작은이삭의 대는 길이가 1mm 정도로서 중축과 함께 털이 밀생하며, 작은 가지에는 한 개의 양성화와 수꽃이 달린다. 첫째 포영은 길이 107mm, 맥이 없으며 둘째 포영은 길이 3mm, 3~5맥이 있다. 퇴화된 포영은 소수와 길이가 같고 양성화를 둘러싸며 7맥이 있고 양성화의 호영은 5맥이 있으며 내영과 길이가 같다. 수술은 3개이다. 열매는 9~10월에 결실한다. 햇빛이 잘 드는 임도 주변이나 숲 가장자리, 빈터, 풀밭 등에서 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 이 종은 다발털의 수가 많고, 잔이삭과 같이 떨어지는 점에서 거센털의 수가 비교적 적고, 잔이삭이 떨어진 후에도 꽃차례에 거센털이 붙어 있는 강아지풀속과 구별된다. 관상용으로 심어 기르거나 잎을 공예품 재료로 이용한다. 뿌리줄기를 약용하며, 전초와 열매를 가축 먹이로 이용한다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 중국 등 아시아 온대 및 열대지방에 분포한다.
