Bambusa borealis Hack.
사초목 벼과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 줄기는 곧추서고, 높이 1m, 지름 3~6mm 정도 자라며, 마디는 밋밋하고, 포는 줄기를 감싸는데 마디보다 길며 센털이 달린다. 잎은 가지 끝에 2~3장씩 모여 있는 것처럼 달리며, 장타원상 피침형으로 길이 10~30cm, 너비 2~6cm이며, 끝은 점차 뾰족해지고, 뒷면 아래쪽에 털이 달리기도 하며, 잎집에는 털이 없다. 잎 가장자리에는 아주 조그만 톱니들이 있다. 꽃은 4월에 원추꽃차례에 무리 지어 피는데, 꽃차례에는 털이 있으며, 아래쪽에는 자주색 포가 있다. 작은이삭은 2~5개의 낱꽃으로 이루어지며, 포영은 길이가 다르고, 호영는 길이 7~10mm이다. 열매는 5~6월에 결실한다. 그늘진 산기슭에서 자라는 목본성 상록 여러해살이풀이다. 제주도에 있는 제주조릿대는 잎 뒷면에 털이 있으며, 작은이삭이 녹색인 점에서 구분되며, 울릉도에 있는 섬대는 키가 작고 잎 뒷면이 백색이 돌고, 잎줄 사이에 털이 있어 구분된다. 관상용, 지피식물로 심는다. 잎은 약용하고, 열매는 식용한다. 산죽, 갓대, 산대, 긔주조릿대, 신우대, 섬대, 기주조릿대라고도 부른다. 한반도 북부 평안남도와 함경남도 이남에서 자라며, 일본에도 분포한다.
