분류체계
사초목 벼과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 터키 원산이며 식용이나 주정의 원료로 사용하기 위해 재배하는 두해살이풀이다. 줄기는 여러 개가 모여나며, 곧게 서고, 높이 60~150cm이다. 잎집 입구에 잎귀가 있다. 잎몸은 길이 10~20cm이고, 너비 6~10mm이다. 잎혀는 1mm이다. 꽃은 5월에 피는데 전체 꽃차례는 납작하며, 작은이삭이 마디마다 조밀하게 직접 달려 두 줄로 되며, 길이 10~15cm이다. 작은이삭은 길이 12~15mm이며, 꽃이 두 개 들어 있다. 두 개의 포영은 길이와 모양이 같고, 길이 10~12mm이고, 끝이 뾰족하다. 호영은 14~15mm로 질기고, 가장자리에 털이 있으며 2~5cm의 까락이 있다. 열매는 영과로, 도란형이며 꼭지 부분에 홈이 있고, 7월경에 익는다. 우리나라 전역 및 전 세계 각지에서 재배한다. 식용, 사료용, 주정 원료용으로 한다. 밀과는 포영이 피침형으로 뾰족한 것이 다르다.
