백합목 물옥잠과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 열대 아메리카 원산이며 연못이나 수조에 관상용 또는 수질정화용으로 식재하는 부수성 여러해살이풀로 수생식물이다. 잎자루는 길이 10~20cm로 중앙이 부레와 같이 되어 물 위에 뜬다. 잎은 뿌리에서 모여나며, 난형 또는 난상 원형으로 길이와 폭이 각각 5~13cm, 끝은 볼록하며, 밝은 녹색으로 두껍다. 꽃은 8~9월에 피는데 총상꽃차례를 이루며, 연한 보라색을 띤다. 화피는 밑부분이 깔때기처럼 퍼지며, 6갈래로 갈라진다. 수술은 6개, 암술대는 가늘고 길다. 우리나라 전역에서 식재하며, 북아메리카, 일본, 중국 등지에 귀화식물로 정착하여 분포한다. 물옥잠속에 비해 부엽성으로 잎자루에 부레가 있어 물 위에 뜨며, 화피의 밑부분이 통 모양이므로 다르다. 중금속 제거 기능이 있는 것으로 알려져 인공습지, 인공섬 등을 조성하는 데 이용한다. 관상용, 수질정화용으로 기르며, 가축 사료로 쓰기도 한다. 배옥잠, 부대물옥잠이라고도 한다.
