남아메리카 원산의 귀화식물이며 관상용으로 정원이나 화단에 식재하는 여러해살이풀이다. 키는 30cm가량이고, 비늘줄기가 파 모양이다. 잎은 밀생, 가늘고 두꺼우며, 짙은 녹색으로 꽃줄기보다 길다. 사철 내내 푸르지만 3~4월에 새잎으로 바뀐다. 꽃은 7~10월에 걸쳐 피며 흰색 또는 연한 붉은색이고 꽃줄기 끝에 1개씩 위를 향해 달리며, 밤에는 오므라들고 낮에는 핀다. 화피는 6장, 긴 타원형, 꽃부리통은 매우 짧고, 수술은 6개이다. 열매는 삭과, 녹색이다. 우리나라 각지에서 관상용으로 재배한다. 이 종은 나도사프란에 비해 잎이 가늘고 두꺼우며 꽃이 흰색이므로 다르다. 또한 붓꽃과의 사프란은 암술머리가 붉은색으로 실처럼 가늘고 길게 자라는 반면, 흰꽃나도사프란은 암술머리가 길게 자라지 않고 뭉툭하므로 구별된다.
