남부지방과 울릉도에 자라는 덩굴성 여러해살이풀이다. 뿌리줄기는 옆으로 길게 뻗는다. 줄기는 가늘고 마디에 흰색 털이 모여 난다. 덩굴손은 끝이 1~2갈래로 갈라진다. 잎은 어긋나며, 5~7개의 작은 잎으로 된 손바닥 모양 겹잎이다. 잎 양면에 흰색 털이 있다. 꽃은 8~9월에 암수딴포기에 피고, 노란빛이 도는 녹색이며 잎겨드랑이에서 나온 원추꽃차례에 달린다. 열매는 장과, 둥글다. 인도, 일본, 중국 등지에 분포한다. [저작재산권자]
