표면에는 각 나층을 따라 일정한 크기의 혹이 줄지어 있고, 그 사이에 2줄의 흰색 실선이 배열되어 있다. 우리나라 서해 남부를 포함한 전 연안에 분포하며, 일본, 중국 등에도 분포하는 온대성 종이다. 우리나라 암석 해안에서 가장 흔한 종으로 대수리라는 이름은 수가 많다는 것에서 붙여진 이름이다. [저작재산권자]

조간대에서 조하대 얕은 수심의 암석지대에서 서식한다. 물이 빠진 그늘진 바위 면이나 틈바구니에서 떼를 지어 몰려 있는 모습을 볼 수 있다. 암수 구분이 뚜렷하며, 수컷은 생식기를 이용해 짝짓기를 하는데, 페로몬을 이용하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 주로 조간대의 조개나 다른 연체동물의 껍질에 구멍을 뚫고 살을 섭식하는 육식성 포식자이다. [2]
