굴목 키조개과에 속하는 대형 패류이다. 패각은 길이 220mm, 높이 145mm 정도이다. 각정부(殼頂部)가 좁고 배면과 등면이 넓어지면서 삼각형을 이룬다. 방사륵이 발달하였고 뒤쪽 부분은 방사륵 위에 날카로운 인편상의 돌기가 나타나기도 한다. 껍질 안쪽 면은 연한 갈색이다. 조간대에서 수심 90m 정도의 모래진흙 또는 진흙바닥에 집단으로 서식한다. 섭식 활동은 각정부를 아래로 하여 몸체 대부분을 바닥에 잠입한 상태로 수관을 이용하여 물속의 플랑크톤을 걸러 먹는다. 서해, 남해 연안에 서식하며, 세계적으로 일본, 중국, 호주, 서태평양 연안에 분포한다.
