민가 주변, 길가, 경작지 주변 및 황무지 등 간섭이 심한 곳에서 자라는 한해살이풀로 높이 40~80cm이다. 잎은 어긋나며, 피침형이고 양 끝이 좁으며 길이 5~12cm, 폭 0.8~3.5cm로서 가장자리는 밋밋하다. 잎 표면에 검은 점이 있고 뒷면에는 잔 샘점이 밀생하며, 가장자리와 양면 가운데 잎맥 위에 잔털이 있다. 잎자루는 턱잎보다 짧고 턱잎은 잎집 모양으로 털이 거의 없거나 짧고 부드러운 털이 있으며 마디가 굵다. 꽃은 6~9월에 피고 길이 1~4cm의 이삭꽃차례는 다소 밑으로 처진다. 화피는 연한 녹색으로 끝이 4~5개로 깊게 갈라진다. 꽃잎은 없으며 수술 6개, 암술대 2개이고 씨방은 타원형, 수과는 흑색이며 편원형이고, 겉에 잔 점이 있으며 꽃받침으로 싸여 있다. 우리나라 전역에 자라며, 중국, 시베리아 극동부, 북미, 유럽 등에도 분포한다. 턱잎은 잎자루보다 길며, 윗가장자리가 거의 수평으로 털이 없는 점에서 물여뀌를 제외한 대부분의 여뀌류를 비롯하여 턱잎에 긴 털이 있는 개여뀌와 구별된다. 관상식물로 이용할 수 있다.
