갓은 30~80mm로 반구형이나 차차 평반구형 내지 편평형이 된다. 갓 표면은 밝은 다갈색 내지 적갈색이며, 습하면 점성이 있고, 갓 둘레는 옅은 색이며, 백색의 섬유상 피막이 있다. 조직은 황백색이다. 주름살은 완전붙은형으로 약간 빽빽하고, 처음에는 황백색이나 후에 자갈색이 된다. 대는 50~100×8~15mm로 속이 비어 있고 황백색이나 하부는 적갈색이다. 턱받이는 없다. 포자는 5~7×3.5~4.5μm로 난형이고 발아공이 있다. 가을에 활엽수의 고목 그루터기 또는 땅에 묻힌 나무 등에 군생 또는 속생한다. 다소 보기 드문 버섯으로 식용할 수 있다. 북반구 난·온대 이북에 분포한다.
