패각은 길이 39.5mm, 높이 29.5mm, 폭 17.3mm로 길고 사각형에 가까운 난형이다. 표면은 거칠며 성장맥은 깊어 계단상을 나타낸다. 각정은 완전히 앞으로 치우쳐 있으며 꼬부라지지 않는다. 각피는 흰색의 각정부와 검은색의 후배연, 복연 및 후연을 제외하고는 보통 닳아 없어진다. 유패는 강한 방사륵을 가지나 성체의 경우는 대부분 닳아 있다. 성장륵은 매우 굵고 깊어 계단상을 형성한다. 전연에서 후배연의 중앙부까지 타원형이며 후배연의 중앙부 이후는 복연과 평행하다. 복연은 오목한 족사구를 제외하고는 직선상이다. 패각의 내면은 검은색으로 강한 진주광택이 있으며 앞부분은 흰색이다. 1개의 큰 교치가 좌각에 있다. 인대는 두텁고 외투선은 주연과 평행하며 만입하지 않는다. 조간대의 암반에 족사로 부착하며 무리를 지어 서식한다. 한국(강원, 경북, 경남, 전남, 제주), 일본, 중국, 대만, 필리핀, 호주, 인도태평양 등에 분포한다.
