우리나라에서는 동해 남부를 포함하여 전 연안에 분포하는데 특히 서해 중부 해역에서 많이 잡힌다. 몸속에는 길쭉한 타원형의 두터운 껍질을 가지고 있는데, 그 끝에는 침과 같은 돌기가 있다. 수컷은 피부에 가로줄 무늬가 있다. 서해안에서는 주로 20~30m 범위에서 무리 지어 있는 모습을 볼 수 있는데, 100m 이상의 수심에서도 발견된다. [저작재산권자]

수심 10-20m 깊이에 살며 내만에 들어와서 산란을 한다. [2]
수심 10m에서부터 100m까지 서식하는 것으로 알려져 있는데 서해안에서는 주로 20m 내외의 수심에서 나타난다. 회유하지 않는 저서성 오징어류로서 진흙 바닥 또는 모래 섞인 진흙 바닥에 수 개체에서 수십 개체가 모여 있다. 봄철에 주로 산란하며 얕은 바다의 암초나 해조류에 알을 붙인 후 보통 죽는다. [1]
