패각의 크기는 길이 150mm, 높이 30mm이다. 패각의 형태는 앞 · 뒤로 긴 사각형이다. 껍질은 두꺼운 편이고 녹갈색 광택이 나는 각피에 덮여 있다. 등선과 배선은 평행하고 앞쪽은 비스듬한 직선이고 뒤쪽은 둥글다. 각정(殼頂)은 앞쪽 끝부분에 위치한다. 성장맥과 윤맥이 뚜렷하다. 패각 내면은 백색이며 성장맥을 따라 적갈색 띠무늬가 나타난다. 각정 아래 상아 모양의 긴 이빨이 있고 그 뒤에 긴 치구가 있다. 죽합과 중에서 가장 대형이다. 조간대에서 수심 70m의 모랫바닥에 서식한다. 우리나라 충남, 전북, 전남, 경남 연안, 세계적으로는 일본, 중국, 하이난 등에 분포한다. 수산 식량 자원으로의 가치가 높은 종이다.
