Viburnum opulus var. calvescens (Rehder) H. Hara

고도가 낮은 산지의 숲속이나 가장자리에 흔하게 자라는 떨기나무이다. 줄기는 껍질에 코르크가 발달하며, 골속은 희고, 높이 3~6m 정도로 자란다. 어린가지는 붉은빛이 도는 녹색이며, 털이 없다. 잎은 마주나며, 위쪽이 보통 3갈래로 갈라지고, 넓은 난형, 길이와 폭이 각각 4~12cm, 가장자리에 톱니가 있다. 잎자루는 밑에 턱잎이 2장 있고, 끝에 큰 샘점이 2개 있으며, 1~5cm다. 꽃은 5~6월에 피며 햇가지 끝에서 난 길이 2~6cm의 꽃대 끝에 산방꽃차례로 달리며, 흰색이다. 꽃차례 가장자리에는 지름 2~3cm의 중성꽃이, 안쪽에는 지름 5~6mm 정도의 양성꽃이 달린다. 수술은 5개, 꽃부리보다 길다. 열매는 핵과이며, 둥글고, 지름 8~10mm, 붉게 익는다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 중국 중부 및 북부, 내몽골, 일본, 러시아 동북부 등에 분포한다. 이 종은 잎의 모양으로 보았을 때 배암나무와 비슷하나 양성꽃과 중성꽃을 갖는 특징에서 의해서 구분된다. 또한 정원수로 심는 불두화는 모두 생식 기능이 없는 장식화만으로 구성되므로 구분된다. 관상용으로 심는다.
