분류체계
상록성 큰키나무처럼 자란다. 줄기는 원기둥 모양, 수피는 회갈색, 거칠고 속은 단단하며 높이 15~25m, 너비 3~6m이다. 잎자루가 난 부분의 아래는 갑자기 굵어지고 위쪽으로 갈수록 가늘어진다. 잎자루 밑부분의 잎집은 크게 갈라지고 마른 잎은 도롱이 모양으로 늘어져 오랫동안 남아 있다. 잎은 깊게 갈라진 손바닥 모양, 길이 1∼2m이며 짙은 녹색이다. 갈래조각은 가장자리에 긴 털 모양의 섬유가 늘어져 있다. 잎자루는 길이 1∼2m, 양쪽 가장자리에 갈고리 모양의 빳빳한 가시가 있다. 꽃은 양성화이고, 길이 20cm가량으로 늘어진다. 꽃싸개잎은 가늘고 긴 대롱 모양으로 활처럼 휘어진다. 꽃잎은 끝이 뾰족한 혀 모양으로서 길이 약 7mm, 너비 4mm가량이다. 수술은 6개, 꽃밥은 방패 모양이며 길이 약 5mm이다. 꽃실은 암술보다 5배가량 길다. 암술머리는 작고 꽃받침은 컵 모양이다. 열매는 끝이 뾰족한 달걀 모양으로 한쪽은 평탄하고 다른 한쪽은 둥글며, 크기는 길이 10mm, 너비 8mm, 검은색 또는 검은빛을 띤 갈색이다. 과육은 달다. 종자는 갈색으로서 납작하고 길이 7mm, 너비 5mm이며, 한쪽은 움푹 들어가고 다른 한쪽은 불룩하다. 우리나라 남부 지역 정원, 도로가에 관상수로 식재한다. 미국 남서부, 멕시코, 북아메리카 등에 분포하며, 미국 남동부, 하와이, 미국령 버진 아일랜드, 호주의 뉴 사우스 웨일즈 등에 귀화하여 자란다.
