Centaurea cyanus L.

국화목 국화과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 키 30~90cm, 줄기에 흰 솜털이 밀생한다. 줄기의 아랫부분의 잎은 어긋나기로 달리고 피침형, 길이 15cm가량, 깊게 깃털 모양으로 갈라지며, 톱니는 있거나 없다. 줄기의 윗부분에 달린 잎은 선형, 가장자리가 밋밋하고, 흰 솜털이 밀생한다. 머리모양꽃차례인 머리모양꽃은 6~7월에 피는데 줄기나 가지 끝에 1개씩 달리고, 모두 통모양꽃으로만 구성되어 있으나 가장자리의 통모양꽃은 커서 혀모양꽃처럼 보인다. 꽃은 남청색, 연한 붉은색, 흰색의 여러 품종이 있다. 모인꽃싸개 조각은 4줄로 배열되며, 날카롭고, 긴 타원형이다. 열매는 삭과, 7~8월에 익는다. 유럽 동남부 원산이며 관상용으로 화단이나 정원, 도로가 등에 심어 기르는 한해살이 또는 두해살이풀이다. 관상용으로 재배한다. 잎은 식용한다. 파란색 꽃은 염료로 사용되며, 설탕이나 가루 설탕에 색을 입힐 때 사용한다. 우리나라 전역에서 식재하며, 전 세계적으로 지중해 지역과 서아시아 지역에 분포한다.
