Smilacina japonica A. Gray
산지 숲속에서 자라는 여러해살이풀이다. 땅속줄기는 통통하며, 지름 7~10mm, 길고 옆으로 뻗는다. 줄기는 곧추서거나 위쪽에서 비스듬하게 기울어지며, 높이 20~60cm, 위로 갈수록 털이 많다. 잎은 5~7장이 2줄로 어긋나며, 짧은 잎자루가 있으며, 난상 타원형 또는 긴 타원형으로 길이 6~15cm, 폭 3~7cm, 끝이 뾰족하고, 양면에 털이 난다. 꽃은 4~6월에 피는데 줄기 끝의 겹총상꽃차례에 많이 달리며, 작고, 흰색이다. 꽃차례는 털이 많다. 꽃자루는 길이 2~5mm다. 화피편은 6장이며, 타원형으로 길이 5mm쯤이다. 수술은 6개이고, 수술대는 길이 1.0~1.5mm, 꽃밥은 작다. 암술은 1개이고, 암술대는 길이 0.5~1.0mm, 암술머리는 거의 매끈하다. 열매는 장과이며, 둥글고, 지름 5~6mm, 8~9월에 붉게 익는다. 우리나라 전역에 자라며, 러시아, 일본, 중국 등에 분포한다. 자주솜대에 비해서 전체에 털이 많고, 꽃은 흰색, 봄에 피며, 꽃차례는 더욱 많이 갈라지므로 구분된다. 또한 열매는 빨간색으로 익는 점에서 홍자색인 민솜대, 흑자색으로 익는 자주솜대와 구별된다. 어린순을 식용한다. 지장보살, 솜대, 솜죽대, 왕솜대, 큰솜죽대, 품솜대라고도 한다.
