Calystegia subvolubilis Liou & Ling
들에서 자라는 덩굴성 여러해살이풀이다. 백색 땅속줄기가 사방으로 길게 뻗으며 군데군데에서 순이 나와 엉킨다. 잎은 어긋나고, 잎자루가 길며 장타원상 피침형, 밑부분이 귓불 모양으로 뾰족하다. 꽃은 6~8월에 피며 연한 홍색이고 잎겨드랑이에 1개씩 달리며 꽃자루가 길다. 꽃받침 밑에 있는 2개의 포는 녹색, 난형, 밑부분이 약간 심장형, 꽃받침이 5개로 갈라진다. 꽃잎은 깔때기 모양이며 5개의 수술과 1개의 암술이 있고 흔히 열매를 맺지 않는다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 일본, 중국 중서부 등에 분포한다. 꽃모양이 나팔꽃을 닮아 혼동하기 쉬우나 나팔꽃은 아침에 피는 데 반해 메꽃은 한낮에 피므로 다르다. 또, 나팔꽃은 일년생인 데 비해 메꽃은 다년생이다. 어린순은 나물로 먹고 땅속줄기는 삶아서 식용한다. 전초 말려서 약재로 쓴다. 가는메꽃, 가는잎메꽃, 메, 좁은잎메꽃이라고도 한다.
