몸길이 5~10cm, 직경 2~5mm이고, 원주상 줄기가 불규칙하게 Y자형으로 분지하며, 중간에 드문드문 잘록해지기도 한다. 줄기는 짧고, 형태 변이가 심하며, 분기점에서는 가늘고, 끝부분은 뾰족하다. 홍자색을 띠고, 얇은 혁질이며, 점액질이 풍부하다. 조간대 최상부에 여러 개체가 군락을 이루어 생육한다. 한국(전 연안), 일본, 중국, 타이완, 러시아, 베트남, 북미, 멕시코에 분포한다. [저작재산권자]
