분류체계
자실체는 크기 5~15cm, 두께 1~5cm이다. 일년생 내지 다년생이고, 좌생 또는 반전하여 갓을 형성한다. 피질이며, 부채 모양, 산 모양 등 다양하다. 표면은 흰색에서 흐린 노란색이며 부드러운 솜털이 있다. 구멍 표면은 흰색에서 크림색을 띤다. 구멍은 원형 내지 긴 각형이고 mm당 4개가 있다. 전체에 벨벳 모양의 털이 있고 동심원 모양으로 늘어선 고리 무늬가 있다. 균사체계는 삼균사형이고, 생식균사는 꺾쇠연결이 있으며 두께가 2.8μm이다. 담자포자는 원통형 또는 타원형이며, 투명하고 부드러우며 얇은 세포벽이 있다. 연중 활엽수의 죽은 나무에 무리를 지어 자란다. 이 종은 기다란 원형의 구멍과 다소 두터운 격벽이 특징이다. 목재부후균으로 흰색 부패를 일으킨다. 한국, 일본, 북반구 온대 이북 지역 등에 분포한다. 북한에서는 비로도조개버섯이라고 부른다.
