분류체계
몸길이는 수컷이 27~39mm, 일벌이 27~37mm, 암컷이 37~44mm이다. 몸에는 갈색 또는 황갈색 잔털이 조밀하게 덮여 있다. 몸의 표면은 갈색이나 뒷머리와 가슴에는 갈색, 배에는 황갈색의 긴 털이 성글게 났다. 머리는 황적갈색이나 홑눈 부근과 큰턱의 끝부분은 흑갈색이다. 날개는 갈색이고 다리는 흑갈색이다. 가슴은 흑갈색이나 앞가슴등판의 가는 줄, 어깨판의 끝, 작은방패판, 뒷가슴판의 두 무늬는 암적갈색이다. 각 배마디는 등판과 배판은 다 같이 뒷가두리가 황갈색인데 띠무늬가 있고 꼬리마디에서는 거의 전부가 황갈색이다. 주로 나무속의 빈 공간, 인가의 벽이나 추녀 밑에 둥글고 크게 벌집을 만든다. 성충은 4~10월에 걸쳐 흔하게 출현한다. 한국산 벌 중에서 가장 크고 매우 공격적이다. 한국, 일본, 대만, 중국, 실론, 유럽, 인디아에 분포한다.
