산속 응달에 자라는 한해살이풀이다. 줄기는 가지가 갈라지며, 아래쪽은 땅에 붙어서 뿌리를 내고, 높이 10~25cm, 붉은 갈색이 돈다. 잎은 마주나며, 난형 또는 넓은 난형이지만 위로 가면서 모양이 달라지고, 길이 2~6cm, 1~4cm, 가장자리 위쪽에 2~6쌍의 굵은 톱니가 있다. 꽃은 8~10월에 암수한포기로 피며, 연한 녹색, 길이 1~3cm의 꽃대 끝에 수꽃과 암꽃이 섞여서 머리모양꽃처럼 핀다. 수꽃은 수술과 화피 조각이 각각 4개씩이고, 암꽃은 화피 조각이 5장인데 크기와 모양이 서로 같다. 열매는 수과, 난형, 길이 1mm쯤, 9~11월에 익으며, 갈색 반점이 없다. 우리나라 중부 이남에 나며, 러시아 우수리, 일본, 중국 등에 분포한다. 모시물통이나 큰물통이에 비해서 암꽃의 화피 조각은 5장이며 크기가 비슷하고, 꽃대가 길이 1~3cm로서 길므로 구분된다.
