Cucurbita moschata var. toonas Makino
박과 호박속에 속하는 덩굴성 한해살이풀이다. 덩굴줄기는 단면이 오각형이고 흰색의 긴 연모(軟毛)가 있으며 덩굴손으로 감으면서 뻗지만 개량종은 덩굴성이 아닌 것도 있다. 잎은 어긋나고 잎자루가 길며 심장형 또는 콩팥 모양이고 잎 가장자리가 5개로 얕게 갈라지며 갈래조각에 톱니가 있다. 꽃은 암수한포기로 6월부터 서리가 내릴 때까지 잎겨드랑이에 1개씩 달려 계속 피는데 황색이다. 수꽃은 꽃대가 길며 꽃받침통이 얕고 갈래조각은 기부가 꽃부리에 붙어 있다. 암꽃은 꽃대가 짧고 밑부분에 긴 씨방이 있으며 꽃받침조각이 다소 잎 같이 된다. 열매는 박과로 크고 많은 변종이 있다. 종자는 편평하다. 익으면 바깥 면이 짙은 황갈색이 된다. 우리나라 전역에서 식용, 약용, 장식용, 관상용 등으로 재배한다. 북아메리카, 중앙아메리카, 남아메리카 북부 원산이며, 각국에서 널리 재배한다.
