분류체계
숲속 또는 숲 가장자리에서 높이 20~60cm 정도로 자라는 낙엽 또는 반상록 작은떨기나무이다. 뿌리는 옆으로 길게 뻗으면서 줄기가 나와 무리를 지어 자란다. 줄기는 비스듬히 서며, 잔털과 샘털, 굽은 가시가 난다. 잎은 어긋나며, 작은잎 3~5장으로 된 깃꼴겹잎으로, 잎자루 밑부분에 바늘 모양의 턱잎이 있다. 작은잎은 길이 3~7cm, 난상 피침형이다. 잎 가장자리에 겹톱니가 촘촘하게 있으며, 잎 양면에 털이 많다. 꽃은 4~6월에 피는데 가지 끝에 1개씩 달리며, 흰색의 양성화이다. 열매는 취과, 지름 1~2cm의 난형 또는 구형이며 6~7월에 붉게 익는다. 우리나라 전남, 경남의 남해안, 제주도 등에 나며, 일본 혼슈 이남, 타이완, 중국 중남부 등에 분포한다. 이 종은 국내 자생하는 산딸기 종류 중 꽃과 열매가 큰 편이며, 꽃이 가지 끝에 1개씩 달리고, 줄기는 가늘고, 샘털과 잔털, 굽은 가시가 함께 나므로 구분된다. 식용 및 관상식물로서 가치가 높은 생물자원이다. 열매를 식용한다.
