산 중턱이나 산골짜기에 자라는 큰키나무로 높이 10m 내외다. 나무껍질은 회갈색이고 세로로 갈라진다. 가지는 황갈색 또는 적갈색, 털이 없고 윤기가 난다. 잎은 마주나며, 길이 1~3cm의 잎자루가 있다. 잎몸은 타원형 또는 넓은 난형, 길이 8~18cm, 폭 3~10cm, 끝은 점차 뾰족해지고, 밑은 뾰족하거나 잘린 모양 또는 둥글고, 가장자리는 밋밋하거나 물결 모양이다. 잎 앞면은 작은 센털이 있고 윤기가 나며, 뒷면은 연녹색 또는 흰색으로 6~8쌍의 측맥이 있다. 꽃은 6~7월에 가지 끝에서 원추상 취산꽃차례에 달리며, 꽃자루는 길이 3~4cm이다. 꽃받침은 길이 2mm 정도이고 흰 털이 빽빽하게 난다. 꽃잎은 넓은 피침형, 길이 4~5mm, 누런빛이 도는 흰색이다. 열매는 핵과, 둥글며, 검푸른색이다. 우리나라 충청남도 이남에 나며, 타이완, 일본, 중국 등에 분포한다. 이 종은 말채나무에 비해서 잎의 측맥이 6~8(~10)쌍으로 많고, 꽃잎은 누런빛이 도는 흰색이므로 구별된다.
