Pergularia japonica Thunb.

용담목 박주가리과에 속하는 관속식물이다. 줄기는 덩굴지어 자라며, 녹색, 길이 2~4m, 자르면 흰 즙이 나온다. 잎은 마주나며, 심장형, 길이 5~10, 폭 3~6cm, 가장자리는 밋밋하다. 잎자루는 2~5cm다. 꽃은 7~8월에 잎겨드랑이에서 난 길이 3~7cm의 꽃대에 총상꽃차례로 피며, 흰색 또는 연한 보라색, 지름 1.0~1.5cm다. 꽃자루는 4~6mm다. 꽃받침은 5갈래로 깊게 갈라지고, 녹색이다. 꽃부리는 넓은 종 모양, 중앙보다 아래쪽까지 5갈래로 갈라지며, 갈래 안쪽에 긴 털이 많다. 수술은 5개다. 암술머리는 긴 부리 모양이다. 열매는 골돌이며, 길고 납작한 도란형, 길이 6~10cm, 겉이 울퉁불퉁하다. 8월에 익으며 씨는 흰색 우산털이 있다. 햇볕이 잘 들고 건조한 곳에 흔하게 자라는 덩굴성 여러해살이풀이다. 큰조롱에 비해서 꽃은 흰색 또는 연한 보라색이며, 꽃부리 갈래는 수평으로 퍼지고, 갈래 안쪽에 긴 털이 많으므로 구분된다. 우산털은 인주를 만드는 데 쓴다. 줄기와 뿌리를 약으로 쓴다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 중국, 일본, 러시아 등에 분포한다.
