Fraxinus quadrijuga Nakai

숲속에 자라는 낙엽 작은큰키나무이다. 줄기는 높이 5~10m, 어린가지는 회갈색이다. 잎은 마주나며, 작은잎 5~9장으로 된 깃꼴겹잎이다. 작은잎은 난형, 길이 5~10cm, 폭 2~4cm, 가장자리에 톱니가 있다. 꽃은 5~6월에 암수딴그루로 피는데 햇가지 끝에서 난 길이 10cm쯤의 원추꽃차례에 달리고, 흰색이다. 꽃잎은 4장이며, 선형, 수술과 길이가 같다. 수술은 2개다. 암꽃에 퇴화된 작은 수술이 있다. 열매는 시과이며, 피침형, 날개가 있다. 우리나라 강원도 이남에 자생한다. 세계적으로 일본에도 분포한다. 물푸레나무에 비해서 전체가 작으며, 꽃잎이 있으므로 구분된다. 나무껍질을 염증, 설사에 약재로 쓴다.
