들이나 길가, 빈터, 물가 등에 자라는 덩굴성 한해살이풀이다. 길이 1~2m 정도이며 가지가 많이 갈라지고 줄기는 네모가 진다. 잎자루와 더불어 거슬러 난 갈고리가시가 있으며 붉은빛을 띤다. 잎은 어긋나고 긴 잎자루가 있으며 삼각형이고 길이와 폭이 각각 4~8cm로서 잎끝은 뾰족하며 밑은 심장 모양, 양면에 털이 있다. 잎자루와 잎맥에 거슬러 난 갈고리가시가 성글게 있다. 꽃은 양성화로서 7~8월에 피는데 줄기나 가지 끝 또는 잎겨드랑이에 머리모양으로 달리고 꽃자루에 잔털과 선모가 있다. 꽃받침은 깊게 5개로 갈라지며 연한 홍색이지만 끝부분은 적색이다. 암술은 1개이며 암술대는 3개이다. 씨방은 도란상 타원형이다. 열매는 소견과, 둥글지만 약간 세모가 지고 끝이 뾰족하다. 8~9월에 검게 익고 광택이 있다. 이 종은 외형상 며느리배꼽과 비슷하나 줄기나 잎에 잔털이 있으며, 잎자루는 잎 뒷면에 붙지 않고 기부에 있는 점에서 쉽게 구별된다. 우리나라 전역에 나며, 중국, 일본, 러시아 극동부 등에 분포한다. 관상식물로 이용할 수 있다.
