기러기목 오리과에 속하는 조류로 비교적 흔한 겨울철새이다[멸종위기 야생생물 II급]. 몸길이 약 85cm. 대형의 기러기로 암수의 형태는 유사하며, 머리, 옆구리, 윗부분은 어두운 갈색 아랫부분은 연한 회갈색이다. 부리는 검은색이고 끝부분에 오렌지색의 띠가 있다. 부리가 두껍고 짧으며 약간 뾰족하다. 날개 끝과 꽁지는 짙은 갈색이고, 꽁지깃의 가장자리에는 흰색 띠가 있다. 위아래꼬리덮깃은 흰색이며, 다리는 주황색을 띠고 있다. 국내에는 전국의 농경지, 호수, 하천, 하구, 해안에 무리 지어 서식하는 겨울철새이다. 월동지에서는 밤에도 잠자리인 호수로 돌아가지 않고 온종일 넓은 논에서 지내는 경우도 많다. 유라시아대륙의 툰드라 지대에서 번식하고, 중국 남부, 중앙아시아, 한국 일본 남부에서 월동한다.   • 국내에는 전국적으로 넓은 농경지가 있는 평야 지대, 호소, 강, 하구, 간척지, 대규모 저수지 등에 서식하여 철원평야, 한강 하구, 시화호, 천수만, 금강 주변 농경지, 주남저수지 등 주요 철새도래지에는 많은 수가 도래한다. [1]

    유라시아대륙 북부의 개방된 툰드라 저지대에서 번식하고, 유럽 중·남부, 중앙아시아, 한국, 중국, 일본에서 월동한다. [1]

  • 흔한 겨울철새. 유럽과 아시아 북쪽의 건조하고 약간 움푹 들어간 풀밭에 둥지를 만들며, 무리를 지어 번식한다. 겨울에는 남쪽의 온대지역으로 이동한다. 번식지에서는 각종 식물의 열매나 줄기 그리고 작은 동물을 먹지만 겨울에는 주로 논에 떨어진 벼 이삭이나 물풀과 풀뿌리 등을 먹는다. 이동할 때는 줄지어 나는 것이 특징이다. 한배의 산란 수는 4∼5개이며 포란 기간은 약 26일로, 암컷은 알을 품기 시작하면 좀처럼 둥지를 떠나지 않으며 하루에 한 번 정도 먹이를 찾아 나선다. 새끼의 성장 기간은 7∼8주이다. [1]
