올빼미목 올빼미과에 속하는 조류이다. 몸길이는 37~39cm로 머리가 둥글다. 몸은 회색이며, 귀깃이 없다. 배와 등에는 세로줄 무늬에 가로줄이 섞여 있다. 눈은 검은색이며, 부리는 푸른빛을 띤 회색이다. 평지나 산지의 침엽수림, 활엽수림, 혼효림 등에서 단독으로 생활한다. 낮에는 나뭇가지에 앉아 움직이지 않고, 밤에 활동한다. 청각을 이용해 먹이를 잡기 때문에 비가 오거나 바람이 강한 날에는 낮에도 먹이를 잡는다. 날개에 솜털이 많기 때문에 비행할 때 소리가 나지 않는다. 둥지는 까마귀나 매의 낡은 둥지와 나무 구멍 등을 이용한다. 알은 흰색이며, 3월에 3-5일 간격으로 4개를 낳는다. 전국에 서식하고 세계적으로는 독일, 영국, 이탈리아, 오스트리아, 일본, 중국, 몽골 등에 분포한다. 국내에는 전역의 참나무와 침엽수로 구성된 산림 지역에 넓게 분포한다. 지역적으로는 강원도에서 가장 많은 관찰 기록이 있으며, 경상북도와 충청북도 등 우리나라 각지의 산림부에서 불규칙적으로 관찰된다. [2]

평지나 산지의 침엽수림, 활엽수림, 혼효림 등에서 단독으로 생활한다. 낮에는 나뭇가지에 앉아 움직이지 않고, 밤에 활동한다. 올빼미류는 청각을 이용해 먹이를 잡기 때문에 비가 오거나 바람이 강한 날에는 낮에도 먹이를 잡는다. 날개에 솜털이 많기 때문에 비행할 때 소리가 나지 않는다. 둥지는 까마귀나 매의 낡은 둥지와 나무 구멍 등을 이용한다. 알은 흰색이며, 3월에 3~5일 간격으로 4개를 낳는다. [2]
