연준모치는 「멸종위기 야생생물 Ⅱ급」의 소형 어류로, 한강 수계의 남한강 상류의 지류와 동해로 흐르는 삼척오십천에 제한적으로 서식한다. 냉수성 어종으로 하천 상류의 소에 서식하며 하상은 암반과 돌로 구성되어 있다. 최근 하천 정비, 수질 오염, 수온 상승 등으로 서식지가 파괴되거나 협소해지고 있다. 현재 한국적색목록에 멸종위기범주로 평가되어 있다. [저작재산권자]

국내에는 한강 수계의 남한강 상류역(영월군, 정선군, 평창군, 태백시)과 강원도 삼척오십천에 서식한다. 우리나라가 분포역의 최남한지다. [1]

물이 맑고 수온이 낮은 산간 계류의 소를 중심으로 무리 지어 생활한다. 하상은 암반이나 큰 돌로 구성되어 있으며 그 주변에 자갈이 흩어져 있기도 하다. 냉수성 어종으로 한여름에 수온이 25℃ 이하를 유지되어야 한다. 석회암 지대의 복류수와 동굴 내 물이 유출되는 수역에 주로 서식한다. 금강모치, 버들치, 둑중개, 대륙종개 등과 공서하는 경우가 많다. 수서 곤충, 소형 동물, 부착조류(규조류), 동식물 조각 등을 먹는다. 산란기는 4월로 추정되며 산란장은 유속이 빠른 여울과 소가 만나는 곳으로 자갈층에 부착하여 산란한다. 수정 후 6일이 지나면 부화하며, 전장 15mm가 되면 각 지느러미가 완성되고 30~25mm가 되면 몸 옆면에 검은색 줄무늬가 나타나 성어의 모습을 나타낸다.
