자라
중국 원산의 거북으로 전국의 하천과 저수지에 서식하고 있다. 등딱지는 길이 15~30cm이다. 등딱지와 배껍질은 인대조직으로 접착되어 있다. 등딱지는 올리브색에서 푸른빛을 띤 회색 등 다양하며, 부드러운 살가죽으로 덮여 있고, 겉에 작은 돌기가 많다. 배는 노란색이 도는 흰색이다. 머리와 목을 껍질 속으로 완전히 넣을 수 있다. 주둥이 끝은 가늘게 돌출되었고, 아래, 윗입술은 육질이다. 목과 앞다리에 노란 점이 없다. 네다리는 크고 짧으며, 발가락 사이에 물갈퀴가 있다. 코는 길고 관 모양이다. 물 표면 위로 내밀고 숨을 쉰다. 수컷은 암컷에 비해 꼬리가 두껍고 긴 반면 다리는 가늘다. 단독으로 생활하며, 주로 낮에 활동한다. 위험에 처하면 상대방을 물기도 한다. 산란할 때 이외에는 거의 물 밖으로 나오지 않고 물 속에서는 행동이 민첩하여 물고기나 다른 수서동물을 잡아먹는다. 육식성으로 담수패류, 갑각류, 곤충, 어류, 양서류를 잡아먹는다. 5-7월에 물가의 흙에 구멍을 파고 산란한다. 겨울잠은 11~3월에 잔다. 자라(Pelodiscus maackii)와 중국자라(Pelodiscus sinensis)를 하나의 종으로 인식하였기 때문에 어린 중국자라를 자라로 잘못 알고 동남아시아나 중국 남부 지역에서 수입하였고, 이를 방생함으로써 전국 하천에 많은 수의 중국자라가 퍼졌다. 자생종 자라는 등껍질이 상당히 매끄러울 뿐만 아니라 등에 투명한 황색 반점이 많고, 배 쪽이 황색을 띠며, 목과 앞다리에 투명하고 노란 반점이 많으므로 중국자라와 구별할 수 있다.
