엽체는 길이 0.5~1m로 자란다. 부착기는 편압(偏壓)된 반상(盤狀)으로 직경 1~1.5cm이다. 줄기는 원주형으로 분지하여 여러 개의 중심가지를 형성한다. 중심가지는 다시 측지를 불규칙하게 낸다. 측지는 중앙부에서 길이가 가장 길고, 상부와 하부로 가면서 짧아진다. 잎은 기부 가까이에서는 비늘 모양이나 위쪽으로 가면서 사상(絲狀) 또는 주걱형이 된다. 파도의 영향이 적은 해안에서 많은 해안에 이르기까지 조간대 중부에서 하부의 암반에서 자란다. 주 생육 시기는 봄과 여름이다. 우리나라 전 연안의 조간대 상, 하부에서 발견된다. 중국, 일본에도 분포한다. 전통지식(문헌/구전) No. 구분 이용용도 이용지식 1 구전 식용 음력으로 3월정도 되는 봄에 지충(지충이)을 채취하여 데쳐서 된장과 참기름을 넣고 무쳐 먹는다. 2 구전 식용 2~4월에 갯가에서 지충(지충이), 꼬사락(꼬시래기), 몰(모자반)을 뜯어서 나물로 먹는다. 3 구전 식용 모자반, 지충(지충이), 꼬시래기, 톳을 채취하여 데치면 지충(지충이)이 새까매지는데 된장(콩)에 무쳐서 먹는다. 4 구전 식용 지충이를 채취하여 끓는 물에 데치면 새파래지고 된장(콩)에 무쳐 먹으면 아주 맛이 좋다. 5 구전 약용 늦겨울 이른 봄 갯바위에서 지충(지충이)을 채취하여 삶은 뒤 된장(콩)에 무쳐먹고 변비에 좋다. 6 구전 식용 봄철 바닷가에서 자라는 지충이의 연한 부분을 뜯어서 말려두었다가 무쳐 먹는다. 7 구전 식용 봄에 바닷가에 나는 지충(지충이)을 비벼서 씻어 널어두었다가 무릅(무릇), 둥굴레와 함께 고아서 죽을 쑤어 먹는다. 8 구전 식용 지칭이(지충이)를 채취하여 물곳(무릇) 뿌리와 함께 고아서 먹는다. 9 문헌 거름 길이가 8-9자 정도로, 하나의 뿌리에 하나의 줄기가 있다. 줄기는 가늘기가 선 같으며 거친 털이 있다. 줄기마다 짧은 털이 8-9개 나 있고, 위 아래가 밀착하여 여지가 없다. 조수가 쓸려갈 때 바라보면 일대가 숲을 이루어 나부끼는 모양이 흡사 말털과 같다. 빛깔은 황흑색이다. 해조의 상층에 난다. 보리밭의 거름으로 쓰인다. 10 구전 농업 지충이는 거름으로 씀 먹지는 않았음 -
