몸의 등면 피부의 바탕색은 암녹색, 청록색 또는 갈색이다. 여기에 불규칙한 흑색 얼룩무늬와 크고 작은 융기가 조밀하게 흩어져 있다. 배면의 피부는 매끄럽고 밝은 붉은색 바탕에 흑색의 불규칙한 얼룩무늬가 산재하여 한국의 타 개구리 종들과 잘 구별된다. 전국의 고도가 높은 산간 계류에서 주로 발견된다. 한반도의 제주도가 이 종의 남방 한계선이다. 한국, 중국, 러시아 등지에 분포한다. [저작재산권자]

  • 4월 중순경부터 산간 계곡의 물이 고인 곳이나 산지 농경지, 수로 등 물이 고여 있거나, 물 흐름이 약한 물 바닥에 4~5개씩 알을 여러 곳에 낳는다. 번식은 4월부터 8월에 걸쳐 이루어지며, 여름철에 임도, 등산로 등에서 비가 온 뒤 고인 물웅덩이에 집단으로 모여 번식하는 경우도 많다. 번식 기간에 ‘꾸욱 ~ 꾸욱 ~ 꾹’ 하는 낮은 울음소리를 연속적으로 낸다. [2]
