우리나라에서는 매우 드물게 보이는 겨울새로 몸길이 67cm이다. 몸 전체가 흰색이지만 첫 번째 날개깃은 검은색, 부리와 다리는 분홍색이다. 어린 새는 등이 회갈색이고 아랫면이 회색이다. 우리나라의 평야지대 및 간척지의 논과 하구 등에 서식한다. 6월에 알을 4~8개 낳으며, 하루에 1개씩 낳는다. 새끼의 성장 기간은 40~50일이다. 먹이는 주로 식물성으로 낟알이나 씨, 잎을 먹으며 물속 연체동물, 곤충, 조개류 따위도 먹는다. 시베리아 북동부에서 번식하는 집단은 중국 북부와 일본 등지에서 겨울을 나고, 북아메리카의 툰드라 지대에서 번식하는 집단은 멕시코만과 캘리포니아에서 겨울을 난다. 우리나라의 평야지대 및 강 하구, 간척 농경지인 철원, 천수만, 영암호, 한강 하구, 임진강, 만경강, 주남저수지 등에 분포한다. [2]

흰기러기는 6월에 알을 4~8개 낳으며, 하루에 1개씩 낳고 암컷이 24~26일 동안 품는다. 새끼의 성장 기간은 40~50일이다. 먹이는 주로 밀, 보리, 감자, 고구마 등의 잎과 옥수수, 밀, 보리 등의 낟알을 먹으며 수생식물의 뿌리와 줄기, 물속 연체동물, 곤충, 조개류 따위도 먹는다. 농경지, 못, 호수, 습지, 간척지 등지에 서식하며 농경지에서 먹이를 찾는다(원 1981). [2]
