기러기목 오리과에 속하는 조류로 흔한 겨울철새이다. 몸길이 약 38cm. 수컷은 머리가 적갈색이며 눈에서 뒷목까지 어두운 녹색이다. 적갈색과 녹색의 경계에는 노란색의 얇은 줄이 있다. 옆구리에는 뚜렷한 흰색의 가로줄이 있다. 아래꼬리덮깃은 노란색이며 주위에 검은색 띠가 있다. 암컷은 전체적으로 어두운 갈색에 검은 무늬가 있다. 둘째날개깃은 광택이 나는 녹색이다. 낮 동안은 하천이나 호수, 간척지 등에서 휴식하거나 먹이를 먹고, 밤에는 논, 밭, 초습지에서 먹이를 찾는다. 월동지에서 작은 무리를 형성하며, 불규칙하고 빠르게 난다. 유라시아대륙 북부에서 번식하고, 겨울에는 유럽 남부, 북아프리카, 중동, 남아시아에서 동아시아까지 월동한다. 국내에서는 흔한 겨울철새로 전국 습지, 하천에 월동한다.
