기러기목 오리과에 속하는 조류로 흔한 겨울철새이다. 몸길이 약 45cm. 잠수성 오리류 중 국내 월동개체수가 가장 많다. 수컷의 머리와 목은 적갈색, 가슴은 검은색, 몸은 회색이다. 부리는 검은색으로 가운데에 굵은 회색 띠가 있다. 변환깃은 가슴과 꼬리의 색이 약간 흐려진다. 암컷은 머리와 가슴은 갈색, 몸은 회갈색이다. 눈을 지나는 황갈색의 둥근 뺨선이 있으며 눈 뒤쪽으로 흐린 흰색 줄무늬가 있다. 저수지, 하천, 강 하구 등지에서 댕기흰죽지나 검은머리흰죽지 등과 함께 무리를 이루어 생활한다. 유럽 동북부, 바이칼호, 사할린섬에서 번식하고, 한국·일본·대만·중국(남부)·미얀마·인도·북아프리카 등지에서 겨울을 난다.     유럽 동부에서 바이칼호 주변까지 번식하고 겨울에는 유럽, 북아프리카, 인도, 중국 동부, 한국, 일본에서 월동한다. [1]

  • 흔한 겨울철새. 잠수성 오리류 중 국내 월동개체수가 가장 많다. 호수, 저수지, 하천, 하구 등 습지에 무리를 이루며, 잠수하여 갑각류, 식물의 줄기, 뿌리, 수초 등을 먹는다. [1]
