우리나라에서 작은 무리가 드물게 월동하는 겨울철새이다. 수컷 몸길이 약 57cm, 암컷 몸길이 약 31cm이다. 겨울깃은 짙은 갈색과 흰색이 뚜렷하다. 머리, 목, 아랫면은 흰색이고, 눈 밑에 짙은 갈색 얼룩점이 있다. 가슴, 등, 날개는 검은 갈색, 부리는 검은색이며 부리 끝 가까이에 분홍색 띠가 있다. 가운데 꼬리깃이 긴 것이 이 종의 특징이다. 해안 앞바다나 하구에서 서식한다. 월동지에서는 무리를 지어 해양생활을 하며, 잠수에 능하다. 둥지는 툰드라 지대의 땅 위에 마른풀이나 관목 가지를 이용하여 만든다. 산란기는 5~7월이다. 알은 6~8개를 낳는다. 먹이는 복족류, 갑각류, 수서곤충, 수생 식물 등이다. 유라시아, 북아메리카 북극해 연안에서 번식하고 우리나라에서 월동한다.
