논병아리목 논병아리과 조류로 비교적 흔한 겨울철새이다. 몸길이 약 31cm. 암수는 유사하며 부리는 전체적으로 검은색이고 위로 휘어져 있다. 눈은 붉은색이고 정수리가 볼록하다. 강 하류, 해안 호수에서 무리를 이루어 행동한다. 종종 수십 마리가 무리를 지어 차례차례 잠수하여 어류, 갑각류, 복족류, 곤충류를 먹는다. 유럽에서 카자흐스탄, 중국 동북부에서 우수리, 북아메리카 중부, 아프리카 동부 등지에서 번식하고, 유럽, 중동, 동아시아, 중남미, 아프리카 남부에서 월동한다. 국내에는 우리나라 전역에서 관찰된다. [저작재산권자]
