황새목 저어새과에 속하는 조류이다. 몸길이는 약 75cm이며, 백색 또는 회색이 있다. 백색형 암컷과 수컷의 겨울깃은 몸 전체가 옅은 붉은색을 띤 흰색이다. 부리 뒷부분에서 눈 주위 사이에는 붉은색 피부가 넓게 드러나 있다. 뒷머리와 뒷목의 각 깃털은 10cm 정도의 가늘고 긴 관 모양을 이루고 있으며, 옅은 붉은색을 띤 흰색이다. 부리는 검은색이고, 끝은 붉은색이다. 다리는 갈색을 띤 붉은색이다. 회색형 겨울깃은 뒷머리의 관 모양 깃, 목, 등, 어깨 부분이 회색이며, 기타 부분은 백색형과 비슷하다. 관목이나 대나무가 밀생한 소나무 숲에서 서식한다. 번식기에 단독 또는 쌍으로 생활하지만, 그 이외에는 작은 무리를 이루어 생활한다. 둥지는 소나무, 밤나무 등에 나뭇가지와 마른 덩굴을 이용해 접시 모양으로 만든다. 알 낳는 시기는 3월 중순부터 5월까지다. 작은 민물고기, 개구리, 올챙이 등을 주로 먹는다. 비무장 지대, 부산, 대전, 서울, 인천 등에 서식했지만 오랫동안 관찰되지 않고 있다. 세계적으로는 중국에 분포한다.     국내에는 비무장 지대, 부산시, 대전시, 서울시, 인천시 팔미도 등 전국에 소규모로 분포한 기록이 있다. [2]

  • 번식기에 단독 또는 쌍으로 생활하지만, 그 이외에는 작은 무리를 이루어 생활한다. 둥지는 소나무, 밤나무 등에 나뭇가지와 마른 덩굴을 이용해 접시 모양으로 만든다. 알 낳는 시기는 3월 중순부터 5월까지다. 알은 청색 바탕에 미세하고 흐린 갈색 얼룩점이 있으며, 2~3개를 낳는다. 작은 민물고기, 개구리, 올챙이 등을 주로 먹는다. 어미 새는 자신의 입속으로 새끼의 부리를 넣게 하고 머리를 흔들면서 먹이를 토해 내 새끼에게 먹인다. [2]
