몸 전체 길이 71~76cm, 날개 길이 137~145cm이다. 성체는 전체적으로 초콜릿 빛을 띤 갈색이며, 날개 아랫면과 배에 흰색 털이 있다. 얼굴, 부리, 다리 색깔로 성별이 구분된다. 암컷은 이 부분들이 노란색이고, 수컷은 회색을 띤 녹색이며 목은 푸른빛을 띤다. 새끼는 배와 날개 아랫부분의 색이 밝은 갈색인 것을 제외하고는 성체와 비슷하다. 수명은 최대 16년 정도로 알려져 있다. [저작재산권자]
