사다새목 가마우지과에 속하는 조류로 매우 흔한 겨울철새고, 드문 텃새이다. 몸길이 약 82cm. 암수의 형태는 유사하며, 몸 전체가 광택이 있는 검은색이다. 부리의 기부는 노란색이며, 흰색 뺨이 만나는 부분은 동그스름하다. 여름깃은 다리 위쪽에 흰색의 반점이 생기며, 뒷머리와 뒷목에 털 모양의 흰색 깃털이 있다. 호수, 강, 바닷가에서 잠수하여 먹이를 찾는다. 이동할 때는 기러기처럼 일정한 대형으로 무리 지어 난다. 유라시아, 아프리카, 오스트레일리아, 북아메리카 등 넓은 지역에 분포한다. 국내에는 매우 흔한 겨울철새로 해안, 하구, 강, 호수 등에서 월동하며 내륙 일부 지역에서는 드물게 번식한다.
