Vultur monachus Linnaeus, 1766
매목 수리과에 속하는 조류이다. 몸길이 100~110cm, 날개 편 길이 250~300cm로서 몸 색깔은 전체적으로 검은색을 띠며 나이가 들수록 색이 옅어져 갈색으로 된다. 머리는 피부가 드러나 회갈색으로 보인다. 겨울철새이다. 무리를 이루어 행동하는 경우가 많고 죽은 동물의 사체를 먹고 산다. 날갯짓을 거의 하지 않고 상승기류를 이용해 비행하며 먹이를 찾는다. 우리나라에 찾아오는 수리류 중에 가장 크다. 철원, 연천, 파주 등에서 흔하게 볼 수 있으며, 최근에는 전국에서 관찰된다. 세계적으로는 유럽 남부, 중앙아시아, 티베트, 몽골, 중국 북동부에 서식한다. 전 세계적으로 분포하며, 특히 우리나라에 도래하는 집단은 몽골 지역까지 이동하는 것으로 확인되었다. [2]
국내에는 지속적인 먹이 공급을 하는 비무장 지대 인근을 중심으로 많은 개체가 도래했으나, 최근에는 개체군 규모의 증가와 함께 분포가 남부 지방까지 확장하는 경향을 보인다. [2]

개활 건조지대를 선호하며, 중앙아시아의 초원지대와 고산지대에서 생활한다. 우리나라에서는 하천, 하구, 농경지 등 개활지에서 월동한다. 일반적으로 단독 혹은 쌍으로 생활하나 겨울철에는 5~6개체가량의 작은 무리를 이루기도 한다. 사냥은 거의 하지 않고 동물의 사체 등을 먹는다. 먹이를 찾기 위해 초원이나 암벽을 이루는 산 등의 공중에서 상승기류를 이용해 유유히 비행한다. 둥지는 교목 위나 암벽 위에 나뭇가지를 쌓아놓고 접시 모양으로 만든다. 알은 2~3월 사이에 1~2개를 낳으며, 흰색 바탕에 어두운 갈색이나 붉은빛이 도는 갈색 얼룩무늬가 밀생한다.
